The geospatial web is changing and fast! Being location aware is fast becoming a reality for millions of people through their mobile phone and other devices.
We're also seeing an explosion in location aware devices of all kinds and as the barriers to accessing and using location information are lowered we're seeing a massive increase in the number of players offering consumer and enterprise services.
At mashup* on the 19th March 2009 we'll be discussing, debating and demoing 'Being-Location-Aware' and asking:
What are the services ? What are the location services we'll come to expect - it's not just about maps anymore - it's much much more. We'll explore the new location aware services and applications.
What about privacy ? As soon as you mention location people start thinking about 'big brother'. We'll be discussing the realities of privacy management and how social perceptions of location are changing.
Where is the money ? The economy is in a full blown recession - how will being location aware help your business grow ? What are the business models ?
Demos:
As ever we'll have a few location aware companies demoing their products & services. If you'd like to demo please get in touch team@mashupevent.com

Steven Feldman
Trained as an economist, I spent the first 20 years of my working life in building materials before stumbling upon GIS. A chance conversation led to me becoming General Manager of GDC and Head of Professional Services at whereonearth.com during the wackiest part of the dot com boom and bust.
In 2002 we bought out GDC with investment support from nearly all of the employees. 4 years later GDC had grown to be one of the leading suppliers of e-Government solutions to Local Government with a strong reputation for innovation and customer service. MapInfo bought the business in 2007.
After working for MapInfo for 18 months as UK MD and Director of Product and Industry Strategy, EMEA I left to look for my next big thing. The search is ongoing and in the meantime I am working as a strategic consultant and an investor, advisor and mentor to technology startups. I am keen to work with businesses that have societal value and believe they can make an impact.
I am the current chair of the AGI GeoCommunity conference.
When not working, I blog about geo-anything, twitter about geo, politics and community and follow the Arsenal.

Alex Housley - Co-Founder & CEO, Total Hotspots
Born just one year after the 80286 processor, I’m lucky to have grown up with computers and wrote my first program on a rubber ZX Spectrum keyboard.
Aged 15 I wrote about search engines and web development for MyDesktop Network, which later sold to internet.com. I helped develop a free eCommerce platform in 1998, and worked on numerous freelance web projects throughout the next few years.
In 2003, whilst studying for a degree in business and computing, I developed a fascination with emerging mobile technologies and realised an opportunity to create Total Hotspots - an independent global service that helps people find Wi-Fi hotspots in over 100 countries. An experienced team includes successful digital entrepreneurs with past lives at Microsoft, IPG and PWC.
Regular updates from a number of leading international service providers, community projects, venue owners are combined with locations recommended by the community. The focus is upon listing quality legitimate hotspot locations and enabling the community to quickly find hotspots, free and paid, and share their experiences via the web and mobile.
Insights includes launching an early SMS-based hotspot locator services in 2003 and a mobile business development role at Multimap during their Microsoft acquisition.
In November 2008, Total Hotspots partnered with Rummble, the location based social search and discovery service. Two months later we launched Total Hotspots for iPhone; which has so far been featured on TechCrunch, Mobile Industry Review and The Gadget Show.

KidSpotter has designed a proven and easy to use solution which enables parents to locate their children by a number of methods. The mechanism for locating the child consists of a small GPS, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device that broadcasts the child’s location to the KidSpotter server. The application allows parents or security staff to query and monitor the location via mobile phones or the Internet. KidSpotter’s development strategy is technology agnostic and with this in mind has open sourced its software engine by integrating with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS technologies.
KidSpotter has been created with two main functions in mind.
For the User/Visitor – a child in-motion locating solution. This allows visitors to the venue to locate their children in the event of a separation and allows for the speedy repatriation. It also prevents children from wandering beyond the boundaries of the venue, an alarm is activated and both parent and venue security is notified in this event.
For the Business – enabling venues to have a greater visibility of visitor movements and patterns through the intelligent built-in analysis and reporting functionality. This data is an invaluable source of knowledge allowing the venue to derive additional revenues by strategically placing point-of-sale outlets, to divert visitors to different sections of the venue and to run incentive/loyalty programmes.
KidSpotter is currently operational in Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures and soon to launched in Westfield London.
